  1. Design the rack before buying equipment — 42U rack with room to expand. Modem in gateway-only mode → UDM Pro WAN port. UDM Pro to first switch via 10G SFP DAC cable. Two Ubiquiti ProMax 48-port PoE switches for all device connections throughout the home.
  2. Use patch panels between wall runs and switches — Each cable run terminates on a patch panel keystone. A short patch cable connects keystone to switch port. Benefits: easy cable tracing, strain relief on wall runs, clean organization. Never terminate solid-core wall runs directly into switch ports.
  3. Add dedicated storage and AI processing — NVR Pro (10G SFP) for 30 days of 4K camera storage. UNAS Pro (10G SFP) for file storage and device backups. Ubiquiti AI Key extends camera AI detection: natural-language search, speech transcription, custom alarm logic, and enhanced facial detection.
