★ 4.7NetworkingPrice tier $$$$

The Pro Max 48 is a strong choice for networks that want more than gigabit access but do not need switch-side power.

Overview

The Pro Max 48 is a 48-port 2.5G switch without PoE. It handles high-density wired device connections where the devices are separately powered, making it appropriate for server rack interconnects, desktop computer segments, and any dense wired infrastructure that doesn't need PoE.

The absence of PoE circuitry means lower power consumption, lower heat output, and lower cost compared to the PoE version.

Why I Recommend It

In racks with servers, storage devices, and workstations, PoE is irrelevant. Those devices all have their own power supplies. Using a PoE switch for that segment adds cost you'll never use and waste heat from the PoE electronics sitting idle.

The non-PoE Pro Max 48 can also serve as the core switch between a PoE access layer and the gateway, where high port density for uplinks matters and PoE is not required.

Performance & Reliability

Same 2.5G non-blocking fabric as the PoE version. Without PoE power draw, the switch runs cooler, which in some rack configurations means less thermal stress on adjacent hardware. All 48 ports deliver their full 2.5G without PoE-related power budget constraints.

Less heat generation than the PoE version makes this switch less dependent on active rack cooling. In environments with limited ventilation, the non-PoE switch handles the conditions better.

As always, control firmware updates manually on production switches. The 2.5G fabric is newly deployed technology at scale and firmware stability continues to improve across updates.

Setup & Installation

Identical adoption process to the PoE version. No PoE configuration step needed, which simplifies initial setup slightly.

Value for the Money

Lower cost than the PoE version for the same port density and 2.5G throughput. If you don't need PoE on those 48 ports, this is the rational choice.

Consider whether future expansion might add PoE devices to this switch segment. If there's any realistic chance of adding cameras or access points to this switch later, the PoE version is worth the premium upfront rather than a switch replacement later.
