The G6 PTZ is one of the easiest Protect picks to recommend when you want a modern PTZ without entering specialist-budget territory.

Overview

The G6 PTZ is a pan-tilt-zoom camera with AI-powered auto-tracking that follows a subject as they move through its field of view. It can cover a wide outdoor area by panning and tilting to follow activity rather than relying on a fixed wide-angle capture.

The Gen 6 PTZ upgrades the optical zoom and tracking algorithm over the G5 PTZ, with the AI tracking capability requiring either an AI Key on the NVR or an AI Port.

Why I Recommend It

A fixed camera captures what's in frame. A PTZ camera can pursue a subject who moves toward the edge of that frame. For large outdoor areas like parking lots, courtyards, and perimeters, one PTZ can actively track an incident that would require multiple fixed cameras to capture.

Compared to the G5 PTZ, the G6 version's tracking is more reliable in crowded environments where multiple subjects are present simultaneously. The G5 PTZ can lose a subject when another person crosses the frame. The G6 handles multi-subject environments better.

Performance & Reliability

Optical zoom brings distant subjects into identifiable detail that no fixed wide-angle camera can match without prohibitive resolution. Auto-tracking latency is low enough to follow a walking pace without losing the subject. Running subjects at the edges of tracking range can outpace the motor.

PTZ cameras have motors, and motors wear over time. The pan and tilt mechanisms in outdoor PTZ cameras are subjected to temperature cycling and weather stress that fixed cameras don't face. Scheduled motor exercise and periodic cleaning of the dome are sensible maintenance steps.

AI tracking requires either an AI Key in the NVR or an AI Port. Without dedicated AI processing, tracking loads the NVR CPU significantly and can degrade performance for other cameras.

Setup & Installation

Mount with clear 360-degree pan clearance. The tracking zones and guard tour positions are configured in UniFi Protect after adoption. Plan which areas you want the camera to patrol by default when no tracking event is active.

Value for the Money

PTZ cameras cost significantly more than fixed cameras. The value case is situations where the coverage area is too large for a fixed camera deployment and active tracking justifies the premium over multiple fixed cameras.

For a single large parking lot or wide exterior perimeter, one G6 PTZ plus two or three fixed cameras often provides better active incident coverage than six fixed cameras. The PTZ handles pursuit while fixed cameras provide context.
