I recommend the G5 PTZ most often when you want a compact PTZ for smaller sites.

The G5 PTZ is Ubiquiti's previous-generation pan-tilt-zoom camera. It's physically more compact than the G6 PTZ and fits in tighter mounting locations where the larger G6 PTZ housing wouldn't sit cleanly.
It offers optical zoom and pan-tilt motor control through UniFi Protect with AI tracking capability, though the tracking algorithm is less sophisticated than the G6 generation.
The G5 PTZ's smaller footprint is a genuine installation advantage in constrained spaces like narrow eave overhangs, column mounts, or interior spaces with low ceiling clearance. Where the G6 PTZ's larger housing physically doesn't fit, the G5 PTZ might.
In deployments where the tracking environment is straightforward, with typically one or two subjects in frame rather than crowd-level density, the G5 PTZ's tracking performs adequately. The G6's improvements are most apparent in complex environments.
Optical zoom and tracking work reliably for typical outdoor perimeter use. The tracking is less capable in high-density environments compared to the G6 PTZ. Motor response speed is slightly slower than the G6 generation, which matters for fast-moving subjects.
Same PTZ motor maintenance considerations as the G6 PTZ. Motors in outdoor PTZ cameras benefit from periodic exercise across the full pan and tilt range to prevent sticking.
G5 generation hardware has a longer field record than the newer G6. Stability of the G5 PTZ firmware is well-established. End-of-support timeline should be considered for long-term deployments.
Same adoption and configuration process as the G6 PTZ in UniFi Protect. Guard tour and tracking zone setup is identical. The physical installation is simpler due to the smaller housing and lighter weight.
If the G5 PTZ's tracking capability meets the requirements and its smaller form factor solves an installation constraint, it remains a valid choice. Price difference between G5 and G6 PTZ hardware may also factor depending on availability.
For new deployments where form factor is not a constraint, the G6 PTZ's improved tracking is worth the difference. Reserve the G5 PTZ for spaces where physical size matters or where budget and existing G5 infrastructure make it the right fit.
